Filtered Groundnut Oil vs Refined Groundnut Oil

Beej Mt. Girnar Reserve groundnut oil

"Filtered" and "refined" sound similar and sit side by side on shop shelves, but they describe two quite different oils. If you've ever wondered why one bottle is golden and aromatic and another is pale and odourless — both labelled groundnut oil — this is why.

Filtered groundnut oil

"Filtered" usually means oil that's been pressed and then simply strained to remove sediment and solids — without the heavy refining steps. It's closer to the seed: it keeps colour, the natural groundnut aroma, and the oil's natural fat profile. Cold-pressed and wood-pressed oils are typically sold filtered (clarified) rather than refined. Think clarified, not stripped.

Refined groundnut oil

"Refined" means the oil has gone through the full industrial process — often solvent extraction, then refining, bleaching and deodorising. The result is neutral, pale, shelf-stable and very high smoke point, with almost no smell or taste. It's built for yield, neutrality and long life.

Side by side

Filtered groundnut oil Refined groundnut oil
Processing Pressed + strained Refined, bleached, deodorised
Colour Golden Pale / clear
Aroma & taste Natural, nutty Neutral, near-none
Character retained Yes Mostly removed
Best for Everyday cooking with flavour Neutral high-heat / bulk frying

Which should you choose?

  • Want an oil with character and a fuller fat profile for everyday cooking → filtered (cold/wood-pressed).
  • Want a cheap, neutral, very-high-smoke-point oil for bulk frying → refined.

Neither is "bad" — they're built for different priorities. (For the underlying method difference, see Cold-Pressed vs Refined Oil.) Just know that "filtered" tells you it wasn't heavily refined — not how good the seed was, which still matters most. (More on buying well: Cold-Pressed Groundnut Oil.)

Where Beej fits

Mt. Girnar Reserve Groundnut Oil sits firmly on the filtered, unrefined side — vagai wood-pressed, single-pressed and clarified, so it keeps the natural aroma and a 75%+ MUFA fat profile (comparable to extra-virgin olive oil) that refining would strip away. Single-origin from Junagadh and lab-tested batch by batch — filtered groundnut oil at its best.
